Tesla Window Tinting Indianapolis

Back to Blog

You bought a Tesla. The glass roof is a greenhouse. The cabin hits 150 degrees in an Indianapolis summer. And you've read five Reddit threads about whether tinting will mess with Autopilot. Kyle has tinted Teslas since the Model 3 launched. Here's what you actually need to know.

Why Tesla Tinting Is Different

Tesla's glass is larger, more curved, and more complex than most vehicles. The Model 3 and Model Y have a massive rear glass panel that extends into the roof. Frameless windows mean the film has to be cut and applied differently than a standard sedan. Inexperienced installers struggle with Tesla glass — the results show as lifting edges, poor coverage, and light gaps. Kyle has the patterns and process dialed for every Tesla model.

The Roof Glass Question

Tesla's factory roof glass blocks most UV but barely touches infrared heat. That's why your cabin still hits 142 degrees on a sunny day even with the factory glass. Ceramic film on the roof drops that to around 98 degrees — a 44-degree difference. That's the single biggest comfort upgrade you can make on a Tesla.

Tesla Tinting Pricing

  • Model 3 — Full ceramic tint (sides + rear): $449-$549
  • Model Y — Full ceramic tint (sides + rear): $449-$549
  • Model S — Full ceramic tint (sides + rear): $499-$599
  • Model X — Full ceramic tint (sides + rear): $549-$665
  • Add windshield ceramic: +$179-$299
  • Add roof panel ceramic: +$149-$199

What VLT for Each Window

Tesla's factory glass already has a VLT of about 70-80% on side windows and around 20-25% on the roof. When you add aftermarket film, the VLT stacks. If you want 30% final VLT on the sides to stay legal, you need roughly 40% film because the factory glass is already blocking some light. Kyle measures your specific factory glass at the appointment and calculates the exact film shade to hit your target VLT. You don't have to guess.

Will It Affect Autopilot or Cameras?

No — with ceramic or carbon film. These films don't contain metal, so they don't interfere with Autopilot cameras, sensors, GPS, Bluetooth, or phone signal. Cheap metallic films can cause interference, which is one more reason to avoid bargain tint on a Tesla. We've tinted hundreds of Teslas in Indianapolis without a single Autopilot or camera issue.

The Windshield Decision

Adding ceramic film to the windshield is $200-$300 and it's the upgrade most Tesla owners wish they'd done sooner. The Tesla windshield is massive — more glass area than almost any other car on the road. A clear ceramic windshield film blocks up to 95% of infrared heat without changing visibility. If you commute more than 20 minutes or park outside during the day, the windshield film pays for itself in comfort and reduced AC load on your battery.

How Long Does It Take?

  • Model 3 sides + rear: about 1.5 hours
  • Model Y sides + rear: about 1.5-2 hours
  • Model S sides + rear: about 2 hours
  • Model X sides + rear: about 2-2.5 hours
  • Add 30-45 minutes for windshield
  • Add 20-30 minutes for roof panel
