5 Signs Your Tint Needs Replacing

Back to Blog

Window tint doesn't last forever — at least not the cheap stuff. If your tint was done a few years ago at a discount shop, or it came pre-installed on a used car, there's a good chance it's past its prime. We remove and replace old tint every week. Here are the five signs it's time.

1. Bubbling Between the Film and Glass

Small bubbles forming under the film are the most obvious sign. This happens when the adhesive breaks down from heat exposure and age. Indianapolis summers push interior glass temps past 150 degrees. That heat cooks the adhesive over time.

Once bubbling starts, it only gets worse. You can't fix bubbles — the film has to come off. We see this most often on standard dyed film that's two to four years old. The adhesive was never designed to handle Indiana's heat cycling.

2. Purple or Pink Discoloration

If your tint has turned purple, pink, or brownish, you're looking at cheap dyed film that's broken down from UV exposure. The dye particles physically degrade in sunlight. The film isn't changing color — the dye is disappearing and revealing the purple base layer underneath.

This is the number one reason we recommend carbon or ceramic over standard dyed film. Carbon never turns purple because it uses carbon particles instead of dye. Ceramic is even better — the particles are inert and don't react to UV at all. Quality film simply doesn't change color.

3. Peeling Edges

When the tint starts lifting at the edges — especially along the top of the window or near the defroster lines on the rear — the adhesive is failing. Peeling edges catch on things, collect dirt underneath, and look terrible from the outside.

Once an edge lifts, the rest of the film will follow. It's not something you can glue back down. The film needs to be professionally removed and replaced. Trying to press it back with a credit card just makes it worse.

4. Scratches and Haze

Old tint develops a cloudy, scratched look that cuts your visibility — especially at night. This comes from years of rolling windows up and down, cleaning with the wrong products (ammonia-based cleaners like Windex break down tint), or just normal wear on cheap film.

Compare your tinted windows to your untinted windshield. If there's a noticeable difference in clarity, the film is past its useful life. Driving with hazy tint at night is a safety issue, not just cosmetic.

5. It's Not Blocking Heat Anymore

This one is harder to see but easy to feel. If your car feels just as hot with tint as it would without it, the film has lost whatever heat rejection it had. Standard dyed film barely blocks heat to begin with — about 30%. As the dye breaks down, even that small amount drops further.

If you're blasting the AC and the sun still feels like it's burning through the window, your tint isn't doing its job. This is the biggest difference between film types. Ceramic blocks up to 95% of infrared heat and doesn't lose that ability over time.

Why Ceramic Film Avoids All Five Problems

Every sign on this list is a standard film problem. Ceramic tint uses inert particles that don't react to UV, don't degrade from heat, and don't fade or discolor. The adhesive is premium-grade and handles Indiana's temperature swings without breaking down.

  • No bubbling — the adhesive is engineered for extreme heat cycling
  • No purple — ceramic particles don't contain dye that can break down
  • No peeling — the bond is stronger and doesn't weaken with age
  • No haze — the scratch-resistant clear coat holds up for years
  • No heat loss — ceramic blocks 95% of infrared heat on day one and day 5,000

This is why we back ceramic with the Galaxy Guarantee — lifetime coverage, even if the damage is your fault. The film simply doesn't fail the way standard film does.

What Does Replacement Cost?

Tint removal runs $29 per window or $79-$149 for a full vehicle. If you're replacing old tint with new film, we include the removal free. Removal plus a full ceramic retint runs $250-$400 total depending on the vehicle. Most people do it same day — the old film comes off and the new film goes on in one visit.
