Indiana Window Tint Laws 2026
You just picked up a new truck or SUV and you want it tinted. But how dark can you legally go in Indiana? Or maybe you already have tint and you're not sure if it's legal. We get this question on almost every call. Ryan walks customers through Indiana's tint laws daily. Here's the straight answer — no legal jargon, just what you need to know before you book.
How Indiana Measures Tint
Indiana uses VLT — Visible Light Transmission. It's the percentage of light that passes through your window. Lower number means darker tint. 5% is limo-dark. 50% is barely noticeable. When a cop checks your tint, they press a meter against the glass. It gives a reading in seconds. No guesswork.
Legal Limits for Sedans and Passenger Cars
- Windshield: Tint only on the top 25% (visor strip). We install these for $59.
- Front side windows: 30% VLT minimum — must let 30% of light through
- Back side windows: 30% VLT minimum
- Rear window: 30% VLT minimum
Every window on a sedan has to meet the same 30% rule. This is stricter than most neighboring states.
Legal Limits for SUVs, Trucks, and Vans
- Windshield: Same as sedans — visor strip only
- Front side windows: 30% VLT minimum (same rule)
- Back side windows: Any darkness allowed — go as dark as you want
- Rear window: Any darkness allowed
This is the big advantage for truck and SUV owners. Most of our truck customers go 5% limo tint on the rears and 30% on the fronts. It looks aggressive from the outside but you're 100% legal. Fronts to match the factory rear on a truck runs $119 to $219 depending on film choice. The whole truck — sides, back, and fronts — runs $249 to $665 out the door.
The Mistake That Gets People Pulled Over
Your factory glass already blocks some light. A brand-new window with zero aftermarket film lets through about 70-80% of light — not 100%. When you add film, the VLT stacks. If your factory glass is 75% and you add 40% film, your actual combined VLT is around 30% (75% × 40% = 30%). That means a 40% film that looks perfectly legal in the roll can put you right at the limit once it's on your glass.
Kyle accounts for this on every install. We measure your factory glass before applying film and calculate the combined VLT. You leave legal — not guessing.
One Thing Most People Get Wrong
Darker tint does NOT mean more heat blocking. This comes up on almost every call. You can have a completely clear windshield film that blocks 95% of infrared heat. Or you can have limo-dark 5% film that only blocks 30% of the heat. The shade is cosmetic. The heat blocking depends on the film type — standard, carbon, or ceramic. The shade doesn't change the price either. You pick your film grade (how much heat you want blocked), and then choose how dark at your appointment.
How Indiana Compares to Neighboring States
- Ohio: 50% VLT on front sides — more lenient
- Kentucky: 35% VLT — close to Indiana
- Illinois: 35% VLT — also close
- Michigan: Different system — requires 4+ inches of clear glass at top
If your tint is legal in Indiana, you're legal in Kentucky and Illinois too. Ohio is even more lenient. Michigan is the outlier with different rules.
What Happens If You Get Caught
Illegal tint in Indiana is a Class C infraction. Fine is usually around $150 plus court costs. You'll be ordered to remove it. But here's the bigger risk: if you're in an accident with illegal tint, your insurance company can use it to dispute your claim. We've had customers come in specifically to get their tint checked before insurance renewals.
Medical Exemptions
Indiana allows medical exemptions for conditions like lupus, severe photosensitivity, and melanoma. You need a written prescription from an Indiana physician, submitted to the BMV. Carry the certificate in your vehicle. If you have a medical need, call us at (317) 240-8813 and we'll help you choose the right film and VLT for your condition.
